Conservation
There are generally two manners of approaching the treatment of an antiquarian book. Restoration tends to focus on returning the book to it’s perceived original state, both in terms of aesthetics as well as function. Conservation has as its focus the longevity of the book. A conservation-based approach may sacrifice binding aesthetic in a bid to prolong the life of the text block long into the future.
At the Redbone Bindery, a conservation treatment might include a safe storage method, such as a custom built acid-free box, or an acid-free non-adhesive paper binding for a book that has lost its original binding.
Often larger libraries do not have the budget for extensive treatment of individual books. The Redbone Bindery has the knowledge and skills to design and implement a treatment approach for a small collection of books to fit within an ascribed budget. Often these treatments include Japanese paper repair methods and simple custom acid-free folders and boxes.
