Conservation, restoration and preservation are distinct but not exclusive approaches to the treatment and repair of an antiquarian book. 

Restoration focuses on returning the book to its perceived original aesthetic and functional state. Preservation focuses on retaining the state of the book at the moment of treatment and taking steps to minimize further deterioration in the future. A conservation-based approach combines these visions according to the context of the book.
